Vision

To prove that libraries and information centers were, still, and will the reliable assistance for those looking for information despite recent and future challenges.

Message:

Preparing library and information specialists who have a sense of responsibility and honesty to serve researchers for rapid, codified, and accurate access to the required information through libraries and information centers in its traditional or electronic form exclusively.

Aim:

The department’s academic program aims to prepare technicians in the field of information and libraries who can practice office activities related to the following areas: –

  1. Introducing the student to the concept of the traditional and electronic provision of information sources in libraries and information centers, such as buying, gifting, exchanging, etc., and how to formulate a policy for the development of holdings for all forms of traditional and electronic information sources available on the websites of international publishing houses and sites of free access to information and how to communicate with them; in addition to introducing the student to how to create a proposed database for electronic provisioning in libraries and information and documentation centers.
  2. To know all kinds of ancient, visual, traditional, and electronic information sources, and getting acquainted with the traditional encyclopedias and dictionaries that deliver the required and modern electronic information available on CD-ROM or the Internet, and how to obtain the information.
  3. To learn how to search on the Internet, access free library database sites, and search for information sources available and how to get them.
  4. To know the traditional indexing methods for various information sources, according to the Anglo-American rules AACSA2 and methods for classifying them according to the Dewey Decimal System.
  5. To identify modern methods of indexing information sources in all their forms according to automated rules such as (RDA), describing the available sources using the Koha system and MARC 21 records.
  6. To learn about the traditional and electronic office information services such as indexing and extracting, lending services, automatic search, ongoing briefing, the selective transmission of information, etc.
  7. To learn about virtual libraries, their locations, ways to access them, and retrieve how computer networks are linked and their forms.
  8. To learn about the concepts of library management, the organizational structure of libraries, and the information center.
  9. To learn about modern libraries, like digital and virtual libraries, and ways to access them and retrieve information sources from them.
  10. To learn how to set up office databases through Access system applications and processing methods, prepare cards and reports, prepare inquiries to reach the required information for retrieving by using these applications.
  1. To learn about free office databases available on the internet and ways to interact with them to gain access to retrieving the required information.
  2. To use modern technologies related to calculator applications when working in various office organizations such as libraries and information centers.
  3. To learn about information networks, methods of connecting computers, their forms to build unified office databases, and the joint retrieval of the required information.
  4. To learn about the organizational structure of libraries and information centers and the basics of library management.

Brief History of Department of Libraries and Information Tecniques

On the recommendation of the Ministry of Education, the Department of Libraries and Information was established in 1985-1986 to cover the need of the Ministry for graduates, which was 2500. The department is continuous in supplementing the labor market with efficient graduates. Yet, the percentage of top ten graduates has the right to complete their further academic study in libraries department in the Iraqi universities to get bachelor degrees. However, the department’s name, which was previously Libraries Management Department, has been changed into Department of Libraries and Information Techniques.
